Nati King Kuldeep Sharma

Kuldeep Sharma is a prominent Himachali folk singer who is widely known by the title Nati King. Born on 26 August 1977 in Theog, Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, he has played an important role in bringing Himachali Nati music to audiences across India and abroad.

Kuldeep grew up in a family with a strong connection to music. His mother, Begi Devi Sharma, was known locally for her singing and became one of his earliest musical influences. He began learning regional folk melodies from his mother and demonstrated an interest in singing from a young age. During his school years, he participated in singing competitions and received recognition for his performances.

In 1994, at approximately 16 years of age, Kuldeep auditioned for All India Radio, Shimla. He was selected to record songs and was reportedly among the youngest regional singers selected by the station at that time. This opportunity provided him with an early platform and marked the beginning of his professional music career.

Kuldeep received an important opportunity to perform at the Dharamshala Summer Festival in 1997. His stage performances subsequently helped him gain recognition throughout Himachal Pradesh. His energetic presentation, strong voice and command of traditional Nati rhythms made him popular at cultural festivals, fairs, weddings and public celebrations.

His breakthrough recording project was Himachali Geet Dhamaka, released in 2005. The album became popular with Himachali music listeners and helped establish Kuldeep as an important voice in the regional industry. Songs such as Rohru Jana Meri Amiye, Meri Preity Zinta, Dhola Ra Dhamaka and Meri Monika became closely associated with his identity as the Nati King.

Kuldeep Sharma modernised the presentation of Himachali Nati by combining traditional melodies and rhythms with contemporary instrumentation. His recordings introduced electronic arrangements and dance-oriented beats while retaining the language and cultural character of Himachal Pradesh.

Over the years, Kuldeep has reportedly recorded numerous audio and video albums. His music represents different regions and traditions of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Rohru, Kullu and Sirmaur. He has also explored Himachali–Jaunsari fusion, devotional songs and contemporary Pahadi pop.

Kuldeep is particularly recognised for his live performances. His energetic Nati songs encourage audiences to participate in Himachal’s traditional group dance. This strong connection with listeners has made him a regular performer at state festivals, cultural programmes and community events.

In July 2024, Kuldeep Sharma received international recognition from the World Book of Records in London for his contribution to the promotion of Himachali folk music and culture. He has also received several reported regional honours recognising his contribution to Pahadi music.

Through a career spanning more than three decades, Kuldeep Sharma has helped preserve, modernise and promote Himachali Nati music. His contribution has inspired younger regional singers and introduced Himachal’s folk traditions to audiences far beyond the state.

Kuldeep Sharma began his professional journey in 1994 after being selected by All India Radio, Shimla. This selection gave him an opportunity to record regional songs at a young age.

His performance at the Dharamshala Summer Festival in 1997 helped expand his popularity. He subsequently performed at major cultural fairs and festivals throughout Himachal Pradesh.

Kuldeep has continued releasing albums, singles and devotional songs across physical and digital formats. His recorded catalogue includes projects such as Dhamaka 2017, Himachali Gidde, Sargam, Nazrana, Dance Fever, Shilpa Shimle Waliye and Pahadi Rang.

His long career, energetic live shows and contribution to modern Himachali Nati earned him the popular title Nati King.
