Bankim Chandra Chatterjee Biography

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was one of the most influential Bengali writers, poets and intellectuals of nineteenth-century India. Born on 27 June 1838 in Kanthalpara in Bengal, he became a pioneering figure in the development of modern Bengali prose and fiction.

Bankim Chandra was among the earliest graduates of the University of Calcutta and later served as a Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector under the colonial administration. Despite his long administrative career, he became best remembered for his extraordinary contribution to Bengali literature.

His major literary works include Durgeshnandini, Kapalkundala, Bishabriksha, Rajsingha, Devi Chaudhurani and Anandamath. His writings played an important role in the development of Bengali fiction and influenced generations of Indian writers and intellectuals.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee holds a particularly important place in Indian cultural history as the author of “Vande Mataram.” The composition appeared in his famous novel Anandamath, published in 1882, and later became closely associated with India’s freedom movement. “Vande Mataram” is recognized as the National Song of India.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee died on 8 April 1894, but his novels, essays, poetry and patriotic writings remain an important part of Indian and Bengali literary heritage.

Beyond songwriting, Bankim Chandra also helped shape Bengali literary culture through Bangadarshan, the influential periodical he founded. His literary works contributed significantly to the development of modern Bengali prose, fiction and patriotic literature.
