Satinder Sartaaj

Satinder Sartaaj is an Indian Punjabi singer, songwriter, lyricist, poet, composer and actor known for his distinctive contribution to Punjabi Sufi music. Born in Bajrawar village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, Sartaaj developed an interest in music at an early age and began performing during his school years.

His passion for music eventually led him to formal training. He graduated with Music Honours from Government College, Hoshiarpur and also completed a five-year diploma in classical music. He later pursued postgraduate studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh, completing his Master’s, M.Phil. and PhD with specialization in Sufi music. His interest in Sufi poetry also encouraged him to study the Persian language.

Satinder Sartaaj went on to become one of the most recognizable voices associated with contemporary Punjabi Sufi music. His songs are distinguished by poetic Punjabi lyrics, spirituality, romance, philosophy and a strong connection with Punjabi language and culture.

Alongside his music career, Sartaaj has performed internationally and has taken Punjabi and Sufi music to audiences around the world. He also entered acting with The Black Prince, portraying Maharaja Duleep Singh.

Through his singing, songwriting and poetry, Satinder Sartaaj has developed a distinctive place in Punjabi music, combining traditional literary and musical influences with contemporary compositions.

Satinder Sartaaj’s musical journey began during childhood, when he started performing at school Bal Sabha programmes. His interest in Punjabi folk, classical music and Sufi thought later developed through extensive academic and musical training.

After studying music at Government College, Hoshiarpur, he continued his education at Panjab University, Chandigarh, where he pursued advanced studies in music and Sufi traditions. He subsequently taught in the university’s Music Department for six years.

Sartaaj gradually established himself as a professional Punjabi singer and became particularly well known for Sufi-oriented music and poetry. “Sai” became one of the songs strongly associated with his rise to wider recognition.

His career expanded internationally through concerts for Punjabi audiences around the world. In 2014, he performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall, marking an important milestone in his international career.

Sartaaj expanded beyond music into acting when he portrayed Maharaja Duleep Singh in the historical drama The Black Prince. Despite his work in cinema, music, poetry and songwriting have remained central to his artistic identity.

He has also received recognition at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards, including Best International Act in 2011 and Best Songwriter in 2017. “Udaarian” received Music Video of the Year recognition in 2018.

Beyond music, Sartaaj achieved international visibility as an actor by portraying Maharaja Duleep Singh in The Black Prince. His academic achievements are equally notable: he holds advanced qualifications in music and Sufi studies and taught music at Panjab University for six years.
